Many do! And for good reasons: Having a branded presence on social media platforms gives you the opportunity to spread awareness around your brand and show up as an authority in your industry. 

But if you don’t do it right, you might be wasting your time or even lose potential leads altogether!

So what content should you post, and how often should you do it? I’ll answer these questions with my 7 useful tips on how to promote your small business on social media!

1. Develop an authentic brand voice

A brand voice can make or break someone’s business. From how you communicate with your audience (aka. your followers) to what content you show, your interaction with them will help you grow a loyal community of followers. 

But before you start overthinking this concept, you can start to develop this authentic brand voice just by being aware of creating a consistent brand voice throughout all your channels. Focusing on how you can provide value to and connect with your followers in key. That will get you a long way!

2. Post various types of content

Because there are so many brands online today, people look for value & personality in all the content they scroll through!

Ask yourself these questions while brainstorming ideas of what value you can offer in your social posts: 

What problems can you solve for your clients? What sets you apart from others in your industry? What would your type of clients like to see? What do they connect with? 

These are the things you need to consider when developing content for social media.

Ensure that at least every other image on your feed contains some value that your followers can benefit from. This could be educational or information about what you do in your business & who you serve.

If your community feels like they are learning from your expertise (for free), potential clients are more likely to purchase your offerings later when they need your service!

3. Post content consistently

If your social media presence is a little bit all over the place, you’re most likely not going to connect properly with your target audience. 

Without consistency, you will not be able to keep their attention long enough for them to want to stick around. This can result in losing important leads for your business.

Consistency is and will always be one of the key elements in maintaining a loyal community.

According to the head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, you should post at least 2 times a week to your feed and your story to grow a following on their platform. However, most businesses post on an average of once a day!

4. Interact with your audience consistently

Well, it can come as no surprise that it’s not only your posting schedule that will benefit from consistency! 

People get a deeper sense of connection to you when you consistently answer comments on your posts and show up in your stories to share more things from your life and business.

In a world with a lot of noise, you can rest assured that people only buy from someone they know, like and trust! 

Pro-tip: Interact with your followers through stories to get new content ideas and understand what they want to see more of. 

You can ask them questions, do a poll or do a multiple-choice question. Receiving direct feedback from your audience is the best way to improve your content and, as a result, grow a brand that speaks to your target consumers. 

5. Teach and entertain via videos

On Instagram (an essential social media tool for creative entrepreneurs and service-based business owners), videos are one of the best ways to create engaged content and connect with your followers.

If you want to level up your marketing efforts with your online branding, creating reels and more video-based content can help you do just that. 

By showing up on camera, you build more trust with potential clients. When you take this opportunity to educate followers about topics related to your industry, you can also show your knowledge & expertise on a topic related to what you are offering in your business.

6. Consider the visual aspects of your branding

How you design your posts will leave an impression on your followers either way. 

So, you might as well do it right!

The visuals of your content are one of the most important ways to connect with a potential client. Your visual branding is what catches their attention & creates a perceived brand value.  

And I’m not just talking about pretty photos…

I’m talking about everything from strategic brand colors, typefaces, your logo and creating a cohesive visual aesthetic throughout your profile (and website).
